Smitten by Mittens

Almost at the end of January and (drum roll please) I have completed both pairs of mittens.   I really struggled with my tension and blocking did fix a few issues.   On the topic of which I had never blocked mittens before so that was another new challenge.

Really happy with Freja mittens they are here –http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/freja

glovestuesday 013

The secret garden mittens are okay – I am very picky – turned out better than I expected.  My colour choice was limited by my stash so a little darker than I would advise – I also reduced the number of colours by one.   Lots of ends to darn in – my least favourite job.  There were a lovely group of people participating in the challenge and they offered lots of encouragement and advice to newbies like me.  The designer was on hand for any questions and this contributed to a great KAL.    Lovely to see all the different colour combos and customisation.  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/den-hemmelige-hagen-the-secret-garden-aka-torirot-mystery-mittens-january-2014

Secret Garden Mittens

I am now smitten with mittens and think there will be a few more – already have two cast on – working on my tension.

So February challenge – I am thinking about a double knit cowl – that needs to ferment for a day or so.

New year Challenge – Stranded Mittens

Clue one Completed
Clue one Completed

Once the dust settled and school started it is time to think about a challenge for the new year – for me this will be stranded knitting.  I have joined a KAL and am participating in NaKniMitMo.  All new to me.

Torirot Mystery Mittens January 2014 is the KAL and the link is here  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/torirot-mystery-mittens-january-2014.  So far we are three clues in  – I am definately at the back of the field on this one but have completed the cuffs for both mittens.

Before the KAL started I also decided to get some practice in on a simpler pattern (less colours) and went with Freja by Emily Pettersson http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/freja.

I am finding both very slow going but learing lots and not too much ripping back!

So NaKniMitMo – January is National Knit Mittens Month – who knew!  The lovely folks at http://www.ravelry.com/groups/i-make-mittens  – i make mittens are hosting this celebration along with their new year party.   Getting lots of help and also lots of inspiration my favourites list is expanding daily.

Yarn diet – I have to stash down seriously this year and have a huge collection of sock wool so I see a lot of shawls and mittens in my future.
